Road construction can ruin your day.

Or at least slow you down. No one enjoys seeing road construction signs and seeing the brake lights of numerous cars in front of you waiting to move. Road construction means waiting, and who wants to wait?

In 1 Samuel 25, the future king of Israel is on the path to mass murder. David and his 600 warriors need a meal and they ask the wealthy (and foolish) Nabal to provide food for them. Nabal rejects David's request and insults him, calling him nothing better than a runaway servant.

David's response? He tells his militia members to grab their swords because they are going to kill Nabal and all his men. David is worn out, tired, frustrated; Nabal's insulting response is the last straw. David has had enough and now he is on the path to mass murder.

The Lord stops David by placing Nabal's wife - Abigail - in his way. She comes to David and graciously speaks truth into his life. She reminds him of God's faithfulness and God's promises. Essentially, she reminds David that the God who he trusted to handle the giant Goliath can be trusted to deal with a simple fool like Nabal.

God placed a wise, discerning woman on David's path as a roadblock to murder. God used her to prevent David from sin.

At times God places spiritual roadblocks in your life. To slow you down. To keep you from sin. Perhaps, to keep you from hurting yourself.

Sometimes in life you can be worn out, tired, and frustrated like David. That can lead to making decisions that are selifsh and sinful, rather than honoring the Triune God. Consequently, at times the sovereign God of the universe has to step into your life and keep you from acting in sinful ways that hurt yourself and do not honor God. At times, God's Holy Spirit might restrain you by bringing to mind words from Scripture. Or perhaps God uses another Christian who comes alongside you to speak truth into your life at a critical moment.

Sometimes you need a roadblock from God.

It will slow you down. It might ruin your day. But it will also keep you from hurting yourself and dishonoring God. Spiritual roadblocks are God's way of keeping you from sin and directing your life towards glorifying him rather than harming yourself.
